The International Advisory Board of the Clean Energy Forum brings together renowned energy experts from business, research and politics. They support the Forum's approach that there must be an open exchange about all available technologies. In the spirit of a broad dialogue, they represent their own views, but not all positions and publications of the Clean Energy Forum.

ChairmanIain Conn

UK

Iain has worked in senior positions in the energy sector for 38 years.

He was Group Chief Executive of Centrica plc from January 2015 to March 2020. A Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 energy, services and lower-carbon solutions company including British Gas, Iain drove the strategy to reposition the company back towards the customer and to build new capabilities for the energy transition.

Prior to Centrica, Iain was an Executive Director on the Board of BP plc for 10 years and CEO Downstream from 2007-2014. Iain spent 29 years at BP from 1986 to 2014 and previously held a number of senior roles in nearly all areas of the company. He co-authored BP’s first Point of View on Climate Change in 2006.

A chemical engineer by training, Iain possesses a deep understanding of the energy sector. Over his career Iain has advised governments on energy and climate policy, and from 2017-2020 Iain Co-Chaired the World Economic Forum System Initiative on the Future of Energy.

Iain is Senior Advisor to Blackstone, and a Non-Executive Director of Applegreen Ltd. He is Chairman of EngineeringUK, and of Empirisys Ltd, and a Non-Executive Director of Oxford Flow Ltd. He is also Senior Advisor to BCG, and an Advisor to Oxford Science Enterprises’s deep tech portfolio. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University, Co-Chairman of the Singapore Green Finance Centre, and a member of the Board of the Stop Multiple Sclerosis Appeal.

He served as a non-executive director and latterly Senior Independent Director of both BT plc (2014-2023) and Rolls-Royce plc (2005-2014).

He was Chairman of the Advisory Board of Imperial College Business School from 2004-2020 and was a member of Imperial College’s governing body from 2010-2019. From 2015-2020 he was a member of the European Round Table for Industry.

Iain studied chemical engineering at the Imperial College London. Iain is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and the City and Guilds of London Institute.

He is married with three children.

Rawi Abdelal

USA

Rawi Abdelal is the Herbert F. Johnson Professor of International Management at Harvard Business School and the Emma Bloomberg Co-Chair of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative.

Rawi's primary expertise is international political economy, and his research focuses on the politics of globalization and the political economy of Eurasia. Rawi's first book, National Purpose in the World Economy, won the 2002 Shulman Prize as the outstanding book on the international relations of eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. His second book, Capital Rules, explains the evolution of the social norms and legal rules of the international financial system. Rawi has also edited or co-edited three books: The Rules of Globalization, a collection of Harvard Business School cases on international business; Measuring Identity; and Constructing the International Economy.

Rawi is currently at work on two projects. One project, The Fragile State of the World, explores the inter-related challenges that undermined the first era of globalization, circa 1870-1914, and which threaten to destroy the current age of global capitalism. The second project, The Profits of Power, explores the geopolitics of energy in Europe and Eurasia.

In 1999 Rawi earned a Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University, where he had received an M.A. in 1997. At Cornell Rawi's dissertation won the Kahin Prize in International Relations and the Esman Prize. He was a President's Scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received a B.S. with highest honors in Economics in 1993. Recent honors include Harvard Business School's Greenhill Award, Apgar Award for innovation in teaching, and Williams Award for excellence in teaching, as well as, on several occasions, the Student Association's Faculty Award for outstanding teaching.

Flore de Durfort

France

Flore de Durfort is CEO and co-founder of Atmen (Point Twelve Energy GmbH), a Munich-based technology startup. Atmen is the SaaS Platform that enables energy-intensive goods producers to easily and continuously certify their green production, saving up to 90% time in the process.


Flore has been in the energy transition space for the past ten years. Prior to Atmen, Flore was E.ON’s Head of Data Monetisation and Incubation - overseeing the firm’s value creation from data generated across the group.

Flore received a MA summa cum laude in Energy Economics & Regulation from Sciences Po in Paris as well as a MA with highest distinction in Political Philosophy and Ethics from Sorbonne in Paris.

 

Arash Duero

United Arab Emirates

Arash Duero is the Managing Director of UAE-based Big Picture Strategy LLC, a consultancy that specializes in communication and marketing services for clients in the energy, climate and natural resources sectors. Moreover, he is a Principal at Strategic Minds Company, a founding company of the Berlin Advisors Group (BAG), where he heads its energy, infrastructure and commodities operations and has for over a decade provided strategic advice to a wide range of clients across multiple industries and functions.

Arash regularly serves as a Senior Expert at Roland Berger, is an Advisor to the Global Gas Centre, and a Member of the German Economic Council. Moreover, he is Head of Strategic Programs at the European Cluster for Climate, Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS) at the Centre for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS), University of Bonn.

Arash previously worked at the European Commission's Joint Research Center (JRC) - Institute for Energy in the Netherlands, as a researcher at the Environmental Policy Research Centre (FFU) of the Free University in Berlin, as a research associate at the Berlin Centre for Caspian Region Studies, was part of the Resilien-tech Working Group of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (ACATECH) and was a Senior Fellow at the European Centre for Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS) at King’s College London. He has also served as an adviser and peer-reviewed various International Energy Agency (IEA) publications. As a researcher, he has published on a number of energy related topics in scholarly journals and other publications, including for Energy Policy, the Bosch Foundation and the German Foreign Office. 

A native of Savannah, Georgia, USA, Arash studied economics at Georgia Southern University and holds an advanced degree in Political Science with a focus on Macroeconomics and International Energy Policy from the Free University in Berlin, Germany. He is based in Dubai and, in addition to his native tongue of English, speaks German, Farsi and Armenian fluently.

Marc-Antoine Eyl-Mazzega

France

Marc-Antoine Eyl-Mazzega has been Director of the Center for Energy and Climate at the Institut français des relations internationales (IFRI) since September 2017.

Prior to joining IFRI, he spent six years at the International Energy Agency (IEA), notably as Russia & Sub-Saharan Africa Programme Manager where he conducted oil and gas market analyses and was responsible for institutional relations with these countries and regions. He also held various other positions, such as at the Robert Schuman Foundation, where he was in charge of a Ukraine observatory.

A French and German national, he holds a Ph.D. from Sciences Po Paris in international relations.

Andrew Holland

USA

Andrew Holland is the Founder and CEO of the US-based Fusion Industry Association (FIA), representing the private fusion energy industry. He previously worked for the American Security Project as COO from 2018 to 2021, as Director of Studies (2016-2018) and Senior Fellow for Energy and Climate (2011-2016), as well as for the International Institute for Strategic Studies (2008-2011).

He also worked as Legislative Assistent to Senator Chuck Hagel at the United States Senate from 2006 to 2008.

Andrew holds a MSc. in International Strategy and Economics from the University of St. Andrews.

Gianmaria La Porta

Italy

Gianmaria is board member of ILF Consulting Engineers and Head of the Management Consulting division.

Previously, Gianmaria served as advisor to corporations, venture capital institutions, private investors, and business consulting firms. He offers strategic planning advice on asset acquisition, asset/portfolio management, technology scale up, manufacturing, marketing, and development of cutting-edge green energy technologies. He has a deep knowledge of the green space related business including biomass gasification, biofuels synthesis, solar and wind systems, energy storage, fuel cell systems and hydrogen value chain.

With over 35 years of experience, Gianmaria has held strategic roles in power generation projects across Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

Gianmaria held senior positions at Leveraged Green Energy VC fund, ILF and Enel.

Anthony Livanios

USA

Anthony Livanios is the CEO and Founder of US Energy Stream. an economist and highly experienced entrepreneur.

An economist by profession, he founded US Energy Stream in 2010 with a mission to bring the highest intelligence to educate and empower business and government leaders. He has over thirty years of experience in leading and negotiating agreements for energy majors, independents, national gas companies, and governments. He successfully executed gas pipeline negotiations, LNG projects, geopolitical risk assessments, and market intelligence.

He has a lifelong passion in education and teaching. For more than thirty years as a Visiting Professor and Senior Training Instructor has been teaching international energy markets, energy and national security, and energy transition leadership, to University students, business leaders and government officials. He has lived and worked in eight cities and four countries over two continents, while implementing international business and government projects. He has a proven track record in delivering shareholder return.

Today, Anthony is one of the industry’s most innovative entrepreneurs and he has created one of the most influential government networks in Washington, DC.

Tatiana Mitrova

France / USA

Dr. Tatiana Mitrova, Research Fellow at the Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University | SIPA and Founder and Director at the New Energy Advancement Hub (NEAH). She is also Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Energy Studies, Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) and Visiting Professor at the Institute d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po).

She has twenty-five years of experience in dealing with Eurasian and global energy markets. From February 2017 to December 2020, she has been the Executive Director of the Energy Centre of the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, a graduate business-school. From 2006-2011 she has been the Head of Research in the Oil and Gas Department in the Energy Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Tatiana is a graduate of Moscow State University’s Economics Department. She has more than 200 publications in scientific and business journals and co-authors10 scientific books as well as best-seller “The 8 and 1/2 Steps: How to Live, Love And Work At Full Capacity” (stories of women leaders).

Markus Mitteregger

Austria

Markus Mitteregger has been CEO of RAG Austria AG since 2008. He has been with the company since 1991, when he started as a production and drilling engineer. He studied at the University of Leoben from 1983 (specializing in petroleum engineering and energy management).

He graduated in 1989 with a degree in engineering. Markus completed an additional Executive MBA program at California State University East Bay in 1998.

Richard Morningstar

USA

Richard L. Morningstar is the founding chairman of the Global Energy Center and a board director at the Atlantic Council. He served as the US ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan from July 2012 to August 2014.

Prior to his appointment, since April 2009, he was the Secretary of State’s special envoy for Eurasian energy. Prior to that, Morningstar lectured at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and Stanford Law School.

From June 1999 to September 2001, he served as United States ambassador to the European Union. Prior to this, Morningstar served as special adviser to the President and Secretary of State for Caspian Basin energy diplomacy.

From April 1995 to July 1998, he served as ambassador and special adviser to the President and Secretary of State on assistance for the new independent states of the former Soviet Union, where he oversaw all US bilateral assistance and trade investment activities in the NIS. From 1993 to 1995, he served as senior vice president of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC).

Morningstar also served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Costar Corporation from 1990 to 1993 and as president and chief executive officer from 1981 to 1990. He was an attorney with Peabody and Brown (now Nixon and Peabody) in Boston from 1970 to 1981, where he became a partner in 1977.

Morningstar served as a commissioner of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (1989–1993). Prior to returning to the government in 2009, he served as director of the American Councils for International Education, a trustee of the Kosovo-America Educational Foundation, and a trustee of the Eurasia Foundation. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Morningstar received his BA from Harvard in 1967 and JD from Stanford Law School in 1970.

Carlos Peláez

Brasil

Carlos Peláez is the founder and CEO of C.P. Brücken Consult GmbH. Brücken Consult comprises three entities, operating in Germany, Bolivia and Brazil, executing consultancy services and renewable energy projects as a part of the energy transition policies & initiatives. Their activities are the integration of know-how, technologies, and finance from Germany.

Carlos holds a PhD from Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany.

Nicolas Piau

France

Nicolas is CEO and co-founder of TiLT Capital Partners, an asset management company dedicated to energy transition, with a first fund that first closed in April 2022 and focused on growth capital for European SMEs of the sector. TiLT currently manages €250m, reaching its target for its first fund.

Up until 2018, Nicolas was SVP in charge of M&A and Corporate Development for Engie, a Paris based energy company employing then over 150 000 people across 70 countries.

He’s been working in the field of energy and project development / M&A for the last 13 years, after 5 years in HR working on social sustainability. He is also a First Mover Fellow of the Aspen Institute.

Currently based in Paris, Nicolas lived in Brussels and Rome and spent a lot of time on transactions in the US, China, Russia, South-East Asia and South America. Sustainability and ethics have been at the core of his motivation, fueled by his graduation in Philosophy and Political Sciences and translated into a PhD in Economics on this topic, earned magna cum laude from Paris-Dauphine university

Herkko Plit

Finland

Herkko Plit is the CEO and founder of P2X Solutions Oy, a forerunner in the Finnish hydrogen and e-fuel industry. Herkko leads P2X with his visionary attitude and actively participates in the creation of the Finnish and European hydrogen ecosystems in several forums. He is also the Vice-Chair of the Finnish H2 Cluster.

Before establishing P2X Solutions, Herkko has been in leading positions in companies like Baltic Connector, Fortum and TVO. He has also worked as the Deputy Director General at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, Energy Department and in the European Commission.

Herkko is now one of the most respected keynote speakers at many national and international energy conferences and corporate events

Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy

Egypt

Ambassador Ramzy's diplomatic career spans over 43 years in which he served in the United Nations, the League of Arab States and the Egyptian diplomatic service. His main areas of expertise lie in conflict resolution, mediation, international security, and non-proliferation. His latest assignment was as United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Special Envoy for Syria (2014-2019).

His 38-year career at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs culminated in the position of Senior Under-Secretary. He served as ambassador to Germany, Austria, Brazil, Slovakia, Suriname and Guyana. He was Permanent Representative to UN and other international organizations in Vienna, where he was Governor on the IAEA Board, as well as Permanent Observer to the OSCE. He served at the Egyptian embassies in Washington, Moscow, and at the Permanent Mission to the UN in New York. He also served as the League of Arab States Permanent Observer to the UN and other international organizations in Vienna.

Presently he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Public Affairs and Administration Department of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy of the American University in Cairo, Senior Associate at Lynx Strategic Business Advisors, visiting lecturer at the Egyptian Diplomatic Institute and a guest columnist at the Arabic newspaper Al Sharq Al Awsat and themagazine Al Majjalla. He has contributed opinion articles to the Financial Times, the Cairo Review for Global Affairs, leading Egyptian newspapers Al Ahram Online, Al Masri Al You and Al Shorouk, Valdai Discussion Club and Russia in Global Affairs.

Ramzy holds a B.A in Economics from the American University in Cairo and, an M.Sc. in Economics from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom.

Gulmira Rzayeva

UK / Azerbaijan

Gulmira Rzayeva is a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES). She is a managing director and founder of the London-based Eurasia Analytics Ltd consulting company and co-founder of SustainWise delivering sustainability, energy transition and climate solution. She was a senior research fellow at the Center for Strategic Studies (SAM) under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for ten years until January 2019.

Her area of expertise includes energy security covering issues such as the energy policy in Azerbaijan including upstream projects, infrastructure, renewable energy production and foreign investment. She also covers East Europe/Caspian region, Turkish domestic natural gas market, SEE gas market, gas-to-hydrogen, possible export of blue/green hydrogen to Europe from countries in the Caspian region and Turkey etc.

Gulmira is recognized worldwide for her reports and seminal articles about energy focusing on the region, as well as for her speeches in some of the most prestigious universities including Harvard University, think-tanks and prestigious international conferences world-wide. Gulmira has published several scholarly publications focusing on her areas of expertise.

Francesco Sciortino

Italy

Francesco is CEO and a co-founder of Proxima Fusion, the first spin-out company of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, founded in 2023 and based in Munich.

Francesco’s research brought him through Imperial College, EPFL, Princeton and MIT, where he completed his PhD on fusion energy. After returning to Europe, he became one the European coordinators for research on tokamak devices.

He later found inspiration in the W7-X stellarator in Germany and joined forces with his co-founders to bring stellarators and their promise of clean, safe and abundant energy to market.

Franklin Servan-Schreiber

France

Franklin is the CEO and co-founder of Transmutex SA, aiming to reinvent nuclear energy for a safer, no long-lived waste, proliferation resistant baseload energy that will be carbon free.

Transmutex has been recognized as among the 100 most innovative companies in the world, a Tech Pioneer, by the World Economic Forum, and elected by popular vote the best cleantech startup in Switzerland.

Franklin is the former head of the New York research laboratory at Sony USA, former director of communication and new media for the International Olympic Committee, past volunteer board member of the Race for Water Foundation to fight plastic pollution. He is a published author in France and contributor to the numerous blogs on the topic of the environment.

Franklin graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Master of Science in History.

Narendra Taneja

India

Narendra Taneja is a noted global thought leader on the policy, security and geopolitics of energy.

Narendra’s expertise range from energy policy, transition, geopolitics and governance to energy security and associated climate issues. He is often cited as “a powerful voice” on the issue of energy and climate, especially in the context of the Global North and the Global South.

Narendra serves as Chairman of the Independent Energy Policy Institute, a think tank based in New Delhi, and is a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies in Oxford, UK. He presides over the World Energy Policy Summit, a reputed conferencing organisation. He was President of the World Oil & Gas Assembly, a meeting place of top global CEOs and policy-makers, from 2001 to 2011. Narendra sits on several International Advisory Boards, including that of the ONS Foundation of Norway and the Energy Intelligence Group of the United States. He is also a Visiting Professor at the NTPC School of Business in India.

Narendra is a known conversationalist and moderator on live platforms like TV channels, talk shows and conferences. He is a regular on Indian and international TV channels in debates and conversation and has appeared in global iconic shows like the BBC HARDTalk and CNN’s Amanpour.

Also a known political thinker, Narendra had served as the National Convener of Energy Cell and as a National Spokesperson of the BJP, India’s governing party, for several years until recently.

He had earlier served as Co-Chairman of the Hydrocarbon Committee and Chairman of the Energy Security Group of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Chairman of the Energy and Green Economy Working Group (India) of the BRICS Business Council for several years. He had in his early days served as the South Asia Bureau Chief for a number of European business newspapers for many years.

His books include “The Far People - A Norwegian Journal”, motivational “My Thoughts, My Motherland - The Quest for a Golden India” and “Meethi Dhoop”, a collection of short stories in Hindi. He is currently working on two books.

He studied economics, business, commerce, policy, leadership, diplomacy and international affairs at St John's College, Agra in India and at the University of Oslo and the University of Oxford. He holds two post-graduate university degrees and several short-term university course certificates. He lives in New Delhi.
