Climate Neutrality by 2045 – Global Context and Impacts on Germany

Climate change and the global climate debate are about to take a course to which the EU and Germany have no answer. The average global temperature is rising continuously, and the increasing number of climate protection court rulings and ambitious climate regulations do not change the 80% share of fossil fuels in the global energy mix.

While the world is preparing for the 1.5–2 degree temperature limits to be exceeded, the EU and Germany are sticking with high resolve to a policy to prevent this. The preliminary highlight is the new goal in the German constitution tying climate protection investments from the new special government fund to climate neutrality by 2045. But what happens if Germany does everything necessary to comply with the 1.5–2 degree thresholds, but they are still exceeded – as is foreseeable globally?

With its ambitious and strict climate policy Germany is taking a path that differs from most other countries. It can only be successful if it is pursued with a comprehensive, market-oriented technology offensive in all areas.
