Small and Smart Nuclear
Smart Nuclear encompasses various nuclear technologies that show improvements over conventional reactors in terms of safety, efficiency, and sustainability. In the context of climate protection, "Smart Nuclear" describes fuel cycles such as the transmutation of nuclear waste. This process aims to optimize fuel consumption and reduce nuclear waste while producing clean energy. In this process, long-lived radioactive isotopes in the nuclear waste are converted into shorter-lived or stable isotopes. This enables more efficient use of fuel and reduces waste volume and radiation duration - and thus the long-term risks associated with nuclear waste storage and disposal.
Small Nuclear is the little sibling of conventional nuclear power: it works the same way, but on a smaller scale and modular design, and with energy just as clean as in traditional reactors. This should make nuclear power cheaper and safer. In addition, Small Nuclear reactors are suitable for use in remote areas. Hardly any CO2 is emitted when electricity is generated from nuclear technology. In addition, nuclear power can stabilize the energy supply because, unlike solar and wind power, it can provide energy on demand and independent of weather conditions.
